Expeditions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What are we going to eat?
A:
On expeditions, the spirit is always to chip in. The instructors will be supervising meals cooked by … students! Eating on expeditions is always fun, because one values home cooking so much! However, students have always done a great job at cooking pasta, rice, dehydrated foods, soups and great stews. Believe me, you'll love it!

Q: Where will we sleep? Are there bathrooms?
A:
You'll be sleeping in three person tents, and in general using a latrine as a bathroom. Some expeditions include stays at Hostels, where a decent bed and showers are guaranteed! You'll find a whole new meaning to the word 'toilet' after doing an expedition! Keep in mind that these apparent hardships are absolutely a small price to pay, considering the paradises we'll be visiting.

Q: Can I bring my music center/walkman/discman/gameboy/cellphone?
A:
Whatever you bring, you carry! Believe me, music equipment can be useful on a long bus ride, but don't bring it along on the expeditions. They get to be a pain.

Q: So, how heavy a load will I be carrying?
A:
You won't be carrying your food, cooking gear or tents. That only leaves your personal stuff, which should end up weighing between 10 and 12 Kgs. Keep in mind that one has to be a minimalist on expeditions. My backpack weighs about 9kgs with tent included! So always think small.

Q: So, what do I have to bring on an expedition?
A:
Check the gear list on the FORM section for expeditions. Follow that list carefully!

Q: Do I need to by new gear for this trip?
A:
NO! Not necessary at all. Stuff that you don't have, borrow from a friend! But make sure you've done this with time, and tested all the gear travelling with you. Especially your boots, sleeping bag and back-pack.

Q: What is the bug situation in the cloud forest? Is there a problem if I'm allergic?
A:
There are bugs in the cloud forest. Most of the time, good insect reppellent does the job. A good check every night for bugs is recommended as well. If you're particularly allergic, we should know in advance and you should bring medication with you at all times. Instructors are trained in First Aid and you'll always be close to transportation if evacuation is necessary. With those precautions, you should be OK.

Q: How long are the hikes?
A:
These expeditions are carefully designed for beginners. As long as you're healthy, you'll be able to take on all of the challenges involved.
